Panic Disorder

Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by reoccurring unexpected panic attacks. Panic attacks are sudden periods of intense fear that may include palpitations, sweating, shaking, shortness of breath, numbness, or a feeling that something really bad is going to happen.

Panic attacks

A panic attack is a sudden rush of intense fear or discomfort, which includes at least 4 of the following symptoms:

  • (1) Racing or pounding heart
  • (2) Sweating
  • (3) Shaking or trembling
  • (4) Shortness of breath or feelings of being smothered
  • (5) Feeling of choking
  • (6) Chest pain or discomfort
  • (7) Chills or hot flashes
  • (8) Nausea or upset stomach
  • (9) Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • (10) A sense of things being unreal or feeling detached from oneself
  • (11) Numbness or tingling sensations
  • (12) Fear of losing control or "going crazy"
  • (13) Fear of dying
